Meyer Z-52 Zoysiagrass
The proven standard since 1951. Seven decades of bulletproof cold hardiness, exceptional density, and reliable performance from golf courses to home lawns.
Why Meyer Z-52?
Meyer Z-52 is the most historically significant zoysiagrass in the United States — the benchmark against which every zoysia has been measured since its release in 1951. Developed jointly by the USDA and the U.S. Golf Association from Korean seed collected in 1930, Meyer was named for Frank N. Meyer, the USDA plant explorer who first identified the collection site along the Yalu River. After 70+ years of performance, Meyer remains the most widely produced zoysiagrass in the country, grown on sod farms in 17 states. For Tennessee homeowners, Meyer means a dense, dark green lawn that forms a carpet so thick it crowds out most weeds — with proven cold hardiness that has survived transition zone winters for decades. For golf course managers, it's the variety that has held fairways in Kansas City, Nashville, and Memphis for 30-40+ years without significant weather injury.
70+ Year Proven Track Record
No other zoysiagrass comes close to Meyer's performance history. Golf course fairways installed 30-40 years ago are still performing today.
Exceptional Cold Hardiness
99% winter survival in severe Zone 6 conditions — the benchmark standard for zoysiagrass cold tolerance. Outperformed Empire (78%) and Zeon (72%).
Outstanding Weed Suppression
Forms a mat so dense it crowds out even the most troublesome weed species. Once established, a healthy Meyer lawn needs minimal herbicide.
Attractive Winter Dormancy
Turns an appealing golden brown during dormancy — not the straw-brown of bermuda. Many homeowners prefer Meyer's winter color over other warm-season grasses.

Meyer Z-52 vs Innovation
Choose Meyer Z-52 if...
You want a 70+ year proven track record, wider availability, and a lower price point. Meyer is the time-tested standard that has never let anyone down.
Choose Innovation if...
You want finer texture, better shade tolerance, faster establishment, and higher turf quality scores — all with the same cold hardiness as Meyer.
Meyer Z-52 vs Geo Zoysia
Choose Meyer Z-52 if...
You need maximum cold hardiness in USDA Zones 6-7 and your yard gets full sun. Meyer's winter survival is significantly better than Geo's.
Choose Geo Zoysia if...
You have shade (3-4 hours of sun is enough), want minimal thatch, or need salt and herbicide tolerance. Geo excels in all these areas.
Maintenance Guide
Mowing
Maintain at 1-2 inches for residential lawns. Mow regularly during the growing season — never remove more than one-third of the blade. Keep blades sharp; dull blades tear zoysiagrass and promote disease. Meyer's density may require a higher-powered mower than thinner-bladed grasses.
Watering
About 1 inch per week from rainfall and irrigation combined. Water deeply every 5-7 days for established lawns. Early morning watering minimizes disease risk. Signs of drought stress include a grayish cast and shriveled leaf blades. Maintain soil moisture even during dormancy to protect crown and root tissues.
Fertilizing
2-3 lbs of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft per year across 3-4 applications. Recommended schedule: balanced fertilizer (12-12-12) in May, high-nitrogen slow-release (24-3-8) in July, balanced (12-12-12) in late August. Avoid high nitrogen rates — they increase thatch, disease, and mowing frequency.
Seasonal Care
Apply pre-emergent crabgrass control around April 15. Dethatch if thatch exceeds 0.5 inches (typically every 3-5 years) — do so after April 15 during active growth. Apply imidacloprid-based insecticide between June 15 and July 15 for grub and billbug control. If large patch is recurring, apply preventive fungicide in fall.
Meyer Z-52 FAQ
Is Meyer Z-52 still a good choice with newer varieties available?
Absolutely. Meyer has a 70+ year track record that no other zoysiagrass can match. It's the most widely available zoysia, often less expensive, and its cold hardiness and weed suppression are still top-tier. Newer varieties like Innovation offer incremental improvements in texture and shade tolerance, but Meyer remains a sound, proven choice — especially for budget-conscious projects.
Why is Meyer sometimes called Winrock Zoysia?
Winrock Grass Farm is a major Meyer Z-52 producer that worked with legendary golf course architects including Tom Fazio, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, and Robert Trent Jones Jr. Their marketing of Meyer under the "Winrock Zoysia" brand name became so widespread that many people know the grass by that name.
Does Meyer Z-52 have thatch problems?
Meyer can build up thatch over time, especially if overfertilized. Keep thatch under 0.5 inches by dethatching every 3-5 years during active growth (after April 15). Using moderate nitrogen rates, organic fertilizers, and annual core aeration all help manage thatch. If thatch is a major concern, Geo Zoysia produces almost none.
Can Meyer handle shade?
Meyer is best in full sun (6-8 hours). It tolerates light shade but is not a shade grass. If your yard has significant tree cover, consider Innovation Zoysia (4+ hours of sun) or Geo Zoysia (3-4 hours of sun) for better shade performance.
